CALPAC, the California Medical Association Political Action Committee supports candidates and legislators who understand and embrace medicine’s agenda. Health care in California is highly regulated and legislated. As government and the insurance industry continue their quest to control health care, your clinical autonomy is in great jeopardy. Now more than ever, you need to fight to keep medical decisions in your well-trained hands. Fortunately, you do not have to wage the fight alone.
Successful Legislative advocacy depends upon an integrated approach, consisting of lobbying, continuing grassroots activity and political action through CALPAC. CALPAC is operated by physicians for physicians. By focusing physician resources, CALPAC supports hundreds of candidates for state and federal office who share our philosophy and vision of the future of health care and medical practice.
The 2008 Primary Election cycle promises to be competitive and CALPAC is establishing a strong presence statewide. With the recent defeat of Proposition 93 (the term limits initiative), CALPAC will now be analyzing and strategizing for 10 termed out seats in the State Senate and 26 termed out seats in the Assembly. In recent election cycles, independent expenditures have become the venue of choice, in which organizations can participate at significant levels in legislative races and assist the efforts of a chosen candidate. Such efforts particularly make sense in the case of competitive districts where the outcome of races is uncertain.
CALPAC must continue to build on its reputation as an organization that stands behind candidates that are pro-medicine. A strong presence in the independent expenditure arena will convey a message to all legislators and candidates that we are willing to put the resources to make sure our friends are elected.
We would like to extend special recognition to our 2008 CALPAC Presidents Circle Members. Thank you for your support!
